Peter Mulhern: Common Sources of Knee Pain

An experienced orthopaedic surgeon, Peter Mulhern understands the many conditions and types of injury that cannot only lead to chronic knee pain, but which can limit the knee’s function and mobility in ways that affect the individual’s quality of life.

As someone who now specializes in total joint replacement surgery, Dr. Mulhern has seen and treated patients experiencing varying degrees of knee immobility and discomfort throughout this career, and has worked to provide the procedures necessary to relieve main and restore mobility as quickly and safely as possible.

The most common source of stiffness and pain within the knee, as Peter Mulhern knows, is arthritis, which primarily appears as one of three basic types:

Osteoarthritis

Generally a condition that appears in people aged 50 and older, osteoarthritis is the result of years of knee “wear and tear;” the erosion of the knee’s cartilage which leads to painful bone-against bone rubbing each time the knee is in motion.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammation of the synovial membrane which surrounds the knee. This inflammation can often lead to pain, stiffness and eventual cartilage loss.

Post-traumatic Arthritis

This type of arthritis many times follows a serious injury to the knee or surrounding area, such as bone fractures or ligament tears which can cause severe damage to the knee’s cartilage. This too can lead to limited function and pain over time.

An expert in total knee replacement surgery, Peter Mulhern understands the most common reasons patients consider or require total joint replacement.
