In regards to hip pain, Dr. Mulhern understands those conditions that are commonly found at the root of the discomfort, including:

Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are among the most common sources of pain the hip, particularly for patients 50 and older. Arthritis typically involves inflammation and erosion of the cartilage within the hip joint.

Fractures

Another common cause of moderate to severe hip pain is a fracture; a break of the upper thigh bone which can often be immobilizing and extremely painful. Fractures can result from falls, a direct forceful impact to the hip or a weakening of the bone that sometimes comes with age.

Hip Labral Tear

A labral tear is a rip in the cartilage that runs along the outside rim of the hip socket (the labrum). This condition tends to be more common in people who perform repetitive twisting movements, such as certain types of athletes.
