Peter Mulhern

As an orthopaedic professional, Peter Mulhern is familiar with those conditions and injuries that most commonly lead to joint pain, particularly within the knees, hips and shoulders. Shoulders, for example, can hurt for a variety of reasons, though the most common orthopaedic conditions which lead to shoulder pain include:

Wear and Tear of Tendons

More commonly known as tendinitis, worn and torn tendons in the patient’s shoulder have the potential to adversely affect stability and movement of the shoulder joint. When tendons, the tissues that connect the muscle to the bone, become torn at the top of the upper arm, pain is not an uncommon symptom.

Arthritis

A common cause of shoulder discomfort and pain is arthritis. The condition of arthritis, particularly that of osteoarthritis, can lead to stiffness, swelling and pain in the upper arm, limiting motion and function that will persist and possibly worsen without treatment.

Bone Fractures

As Peter Mulhern knows, A fracture in the shoulder blade, clavicle or upper arm bone can cause considerable pain for the patient. Generally the result of a forceful impact to the shoulder, or a fall, a shoulder fracture may make the patient a strong candidate for joint replacement surgery.
